چکیده

Spectacular images of colliding galaxies like the "Antennae", taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, have revealed that a burst of star/cluster formation occurs whenever gas-rich galaxies interact. The ages and locations of these clusters reveal the interaction history and provide crucial clues to the process of star formation in galaxies. We propose to carry out state-of-theart numerical simulations to model six nearby galaxy mergers (Arp 256, NGC 7469, NGC 4038/39, NGC 520, NGC 2623, NGC 3256), hence increasing the number with this level of sophistication by a factor of 3. These simulations provide specific predictions for the age and spatial distributions of young star clusters. The comparison between these simulation results and the observations will allow us to answer a number of fundamental questions including: 1) is shock-induced or density-dependent star formation the dominant mechanism; 2) are the demographics (i.e. mass and age distributions) of the clusters in different mergers similar, i.e. "universal", or very different; and 3) will it be necessary to include other mechanisms, e.g., locally triggered star formation, in the models to better match the observations? ======================================================================

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Black Holes in Galaxy Mergers: the Formation of Red Elliptical Galaxies

We use hydrodynamical simulations to study the color transformations induced by star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) during major mergers of spiral galaxies. Our modeling accounts for radiative cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. Moreover, we include a treatment of accretion onto supermassive black holes embedded in the nuclei of the merging galaxies. We assume that a sm...

Chemodynamical Evolution of Interacting Galaxies

We have undertaken numerical simulations of galaxy interactions and mergers, coupling the dynamics with the star formation history and the chemical evolution. The self-gravity of stars and gas is taken into account through a tree-code algorithm, the gas hydrodynamics through SPH, and an empirical law such as a local Schmidt law is used to compute star formation. The gas and stellar metallicity ...

Star formation efficiency in galaxy interactions and mergers: a statistical study

We investigate the enhancement of star formation efficiency in galaxy interactions and mergers, by numerical simulations of several hundred galaxy collisions. All morphological types along the Hubble sequence are considered in the initial conditions of the two colliding galaxies, with varying bulge-to-disk ratios and gas mass fractions. Different types of orbits are simulated, direct and retrog...

The Fundamental Plane and merger scenario I. Star formation history of galaxy mergers and origin of the Fundamental Plane

We perform numerical simulations of galaxy mergers between star-forming and gas-rich spirals in order to explore the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We consider particularly that the origin of the slope of the FP is essentially due to the non-homology in structure and kinematics of elliptical galaxies and accordingly investigate structural and kinematical properties...
